Freedom Financial Planning

Why flat-fee financial planning?

In the advice profession, being independent means working with many product providers. At Freedom, we believe financial planning should be as unconflicted as possible. And true independence means having the freedom to give advice that is always in our clients’ best interest.

+ You deserve to know what you pay.
Percentages can be vague. We want you to know exactly what you’re paying.

We don’t have to sell you products in order to get paid.
+ You save.

Ways to pay us

You have options.

+ Pay from your investments

Best for: Those with sizeable investments and less cashflow; high net-worth individuals; retirees.

How it works: In South Africa, a financial advisor can legally earn up to 1% p.a. from a client’s investment portfolios. For example, if you have investments totalling R10m, the investment administrator can pay the advisor up to R100 000 p.a. on your behalf. We’ll work out your fee as a rand amount and then translate that into a percentage of your investments.

+ Pay directly via EFT / debit order

Best for: High earners who are still building up their investments; those who prefer to maintain control over payments; business owners.

How it works: We send you a monthly invoice, and you pay directly.

What our clients say

“Simon started working with Bryan, I had more at ease about my financial future. There were less concerns about whether I’m doing enough with what I have. Bryan can relate to my life situation and is not too prescriptive, allowing me space to make decisions as well. He has never failed to provide a detailed answer to my questions that really aids my understanding.”

DEAN

“Working with Bryan has been amazing. For the first time ever, we actually know what is going on, what our policies are doing for us, and where we need to make changes if necessary. We were previously completely in the dark, blindly following advice from brokers who did not take the time to get to know us and find out what our goals were. We now know 100% that our best interests are being thought about and looked after, and everything is explained so that we fully understand where we are with our planning.”

MANDY & BRANDEN

“For many years we had advisors who helped us with future retirement planning but were always disappointed that it seemed it was all about how much commission they would earn, irrespective of how badly our investments were performing. Since meeting Bryan for the first time, we’ve felt very comfortable with him helping us with our retirement planning. Bryan has been with us on this road for a few years and we are extremely happy with his patience and making sure we understand what he offers us, how these investments work and how it will help increase our investments going into the future. We also now have a better understanding of how investments work.”

JOE & JUNE

“Since working with Bryan, I have greater insight into where I am now and what I need to do now and in the future to achieve financial freedom. I appreciate his honesty and the preparation that goes into compiling his reports.”

PAUL

“Bryan has spent lots of time getting to know us, and is interested in what we want, value, desire and fear in life. He takes a holistic view of our finances, not just looking at what retirement fund investments we have. There was also a significant amount of time spent in analysing our assets, liabilities and expenses in the formulation of our financial plan. That gives us a sense of comfort and security about our finances.”

FILIPE & VIDA

“Before meeting Bryan, I had never gone past the first introduction meeting with a financial advisor as it always felt too complicated. I enjoy working with Bryan because I feel that he strives to empower me, as the client. I feel more in charge and better able to adapt to changes, rather than feeling trapped in a one-size-fits-all product.”

Questions we're often asked.

+ What is flat-fee financial planning?
Traditionally, financial advice firms get paid by selling products and earning a commission. In the case of long-term insurance, the amount gets added to the client’s premium. With investment products, the advisor earns a percentage of the client’s investment portfolio. With this way of charging, the advisor can only get paid if they sell you products or manage your investments. Flat-fee financial planning is different in that flat-fee advisors charge clients a rand amount for financial planning as a service. That means a flat-fee financial planner doesn’t have to sell or be appointed to products in order to get paid. In short, flat-fee financial planning charges for a service and products are included where necessary. Traditional financial advice charges for products and the planning is included.
+ What makes Freedom Financial Planning different?
There are a few things Freedom Financial Planning does differently: 1/ Flat-fee remuneration model: Freedom Financial Planning works on a strictly flat-fee basis. Our trademarked financial planning process is the service you pay for. We only put products in place if you need them and we don’t charge commission on any products. 2/ Virtual financial planning: Freedom Financial Planning is a virtual business. We meet with clients almost exclusively online, so even though we are based in Cape Town, we work with people all over South Africa. 3/ The Freedom Way™: We took all our learning, expertise and experience working with hundreds of clients and created a trademarked financial planning process. The Freedom Way™ was strategically designed to help you work out what “enough” looks like for you and then help you get there. What else? We’re really big on education. We never want you to feel silly about asking a question – even if you’ve asked it before. Our job is to make sure you know where you stand financially and that you feel confident about the decisions we make together. If we ever slip into jargon you don’t understand, call us out on it. Check out our Knowledge Hub.
+ Do you work with clients across South Africa?
Freedom Financial Planning is a virtual business. We meet with clients online so even though we’re based in Cape Town, we can work with you wherever you are.
+ Who is your service best suited to?
We work with high-earning professionals who are 10-15 years away from making work optional. Our clients want to feel in control of their finances. They ask lots of questions. And if they’re not ready to join The Enough Club yet, they have the work ethic and drive to make it happen. We’ve found we add the most value for people who have an annual (household) income of R2.5m+ and an asset base (household) of R15m+ in value. What’s in an asset base? All your investments funds/accounts, retirement funds, investment properties, businesses, etc.
+ Do you offer a family office?
Freedom Financial Planning offers a virtual family office service for qualifying clients. Through our partner network, you will have access to legal, accounting and tax services. If you already have your own team in place, we’ll work with them as the central point of contact, making sure your estate is structured in an efficient, streamlined way.
+ Do you work with trusts?
We do advise on trusts if you already have one in place. If you’re looking set up a trust, we’ll start by understanding your needs and helping you figure out whether a trust is, in fact, the most practical option for you. If it isn’t, we’ll help you find a solution better suited to your needs. If it is, we’ll work with a specialist in our partner network to help you set it up and manage it. If you’re curious about trusts, check out this episode of The Enough Club Podcast where Bryan and Pieter debunk some common myths around them. Watch now.
+ Do you only work with investments?
Investing is part of what we do at Freedom Financial Planning, but it’s only one part of The Freedom Way™. We also do risk planning, retirement planning and legacy planning, and we help you enjoy your life now. We believe comprehensive financial planning is the new wealth management. Clients are often keen to skip straight to the investing part. But the difference between jumping on a trend and building true, lasting wealth lies in the seeing the bigger picture. You first need to understand what you’re investing for. Then you need to create a safe environment for your money to grow. Once you have these in place, you can invest with intention and confidence.
+ Can you help me invest offshore?
The short answer: Yes, we can. But before we do that, we’ll look at your situation and your needs and help you figure out if offshore investing is actually the right decision for you. In this episode of the Enough Club Podcast, Bryan and Pieter discuss some of the pitfalls of offshore investing that South African investors often overlook to their detriment. Watch here.
+ Are you tied to any specific financial products or companies?
Freedom Financial Planning is fully independent. We are not tied to or owned by product providers. We are free to work with the providers who serve our clients best. Because of our flat-fee revenue model, we are also not incentivised to sell or retain any products. The advice you get is the advice we believe is best for you. That’s it.
+ What happens when I request an intro call?
You’ll get a short form to complete (it takes 3 minutes) that gives us a bit of background about what you’re looking for. Then you’ll be invited to book a virtual meeting on Teams. In the call, we’ll get to know you a bit better, and you’ll have the chance to ask us questions. If we both feel the partnership is a good fit, we’ll discuss the next steps. If not, we’ll happily refer you to another advisor in our network whom we feel would be a better match.
+ How do I know if I need a financial planner?
Do you want to know when you can make work optional? Do you earn well but still fear not having enough? Do you feel confident you can live the life you want with the money you have without prejudicing your future? Do you feel guilty for not having a valid, up to date will? Are you sure you’ll be ok if you fall ill or get injured and are no longer able to earn an income? If any of this feels familiar, you could benefit from financial planning.
