Our story began with an uncomfortable question from a client:
is this good for me or is it good for you?
The client was asking about product recommendations – the backbone of traditional financial advice. Up until then, Bryan believed he was doing great work. And coming from a background as a headhunter, earning commissions made sense to him.
But that question caused him to reconsider everything he thought he knew about financial advice. It set him on the path that would ultimately lead him to step away from the family advice business, where he’d thought he would spend the rest of his career, to start Freedom Financial Planning — South Africa’s first flat-fee only financial planning company.
At the time, the idea of charging for financial planning and advice as a service was outlandish.
Many people said Freedom wouldn’t work. That clients wouldn’t pay for advice. And that the value lay in the products, not the planning.
Yet here we are.
The practice has grown. What started as a business of one supposed idealist is now a growing team of like-minded, highly skilled professionals.
We didn’t set out to be different. We merely wanted to serve clients in the most transparent, unconflicted way possible. And when the system didn’t allow for that, we built our own.
